City Centre Streetscape Plan

Help us prioritise development in the city centre.

Our City Centre Streetscape Plan lays out our vision for developing eight key areas of the city centre.

We want to create more people friendly spaces, cultivate a lively economy beyond 5pm, and attract more private investment.

Scroll down to see the eight areas of the city centre we’ll be developing. Then rank each of them to let us know which areas you want us to work on first. We’re asking local businesses and land owners to do the same.

Once we’ve had a chance to consider your feedback we’ll let you know which areas will be a priority. We'll then give you the opportunity to tell us what you think about the detailed designs.

Square East R.jpg

Square East

Square East

Square East:

This is an important retail link between The Plaza and Broadway Ave. Wider footpaths, seats and social spaces will encourage foot traffic that will benefit businesses. The median strip will be replaced with 90 degree parks you can get into from either direction, and there’ll be easier pedestrian access to The Square. The parking bays will be flexible spaces that can be used for pop-up markets, extra seats or green space.

Main Street East

Main Street East

Main Street East:

Main Street East will feature a new local transport hub with a bus terminal that will shelter people from the elements. Improved lighting will make it safer to catch buses at night and create a visual connection with The Square. We’ll plant trees, put in seats, and create quality open space for cafes and retail to spill out into the street. Additional pedestrian crossings will provide better links to Berrymans Lane and businesses.

The Inner square

The Inner square

The Inner Square:

The Square will be the permanent home for the inter-regional bus terminal. A new shelter will link to the i-Site and public toilets. There’s also scope to add space for cafes and shops, and a flexible area that could be used by the library, Te Manawa, the Regent Theatre, or to tell the story of our tangata whenua, Rangitāne. More paths will make the gardens more accessible and a changed road layout will make it easier for buses and cars to move around.

Broadway Ave

Broadway Ave

Broadway Ave:

Broadway Ave will be transformed into a social space with a raised area outside the Regent Theatre, wider footpaths on the southern side, and sections that can be closed to traffic for markets and events. There’s also potential for a pop-up canopy to provide shade and cover as required. Restaurants and cafes will be able to spill out into the street, and there’ll be a mix of parallel and 90 degree parks along with trees and planting.

Square North

Square North

Square North:

This stretch will become a tree-lined boulevard with safer places to cross the road. The road will narrow to one lane in either direction, with a planted median strip. Trees and plants will be positioned so the footpath and car parks are no longer under the trees. A raised pedestrian crossing at Coleman Mall will encourage people to cross over into The Square.

Rangitikei Street

Rangitikei Street

Rangitikei Street:

Rangitikei Street will be transformed into a tree-lined boulevard to create a greener entrance to the city centre. The number of lanes will be reduced to two in either direction, creating generous space for trees, plants, and people.

Square West R.jpg

Square West

Square West

Square West:

The section that runs past the Council buildings was upgraded eight years ago with wide footpaths and more space for cafes and bars. The section that runs past the library will be developed in a similar way, with more seats for taking advantage of the morning sun. The roundabout at Main Street will be replaced with a simple intersection that will be better (safer?) for people on bikes and on foot. A raised pedestrian crossing at Coleman Mall will create a social space for meeting and gathering.

Church Street

Church Street

Church Street:

Church Street is currently four lanes wide and dominated by traffic. The road here will be reduced to one lane in either direction and there’ll be street trees or a planted median strip. Wider footpaths and raised pedestrian crossings will provide better connections to The Square. A raised space at the junctions of both Square West and Square East will make it easier for pedestrians to move about safely.
